This project is a spin-out of a Raak MKB (First-Time-Right RAAK.MKB05.0202016) where a proof-ofconcept is developed for Virtual Reality (VR) simulation of the vacuum infusion process. This concept
potentially offers many advantages in training new staff in lightweight composites manufacturing. Inspired
by this Raak MKB applied research a group of graduated aeronautical engineers started a Take-Off project
to explore how a start-up could be developed. The focus in this research was on how to apply VR in
composites manufacturing training.
The technical feasibility started with initiation of a clean code-base allowing for maintenance and
refactoring. This is important as this would make the transition from a proof-of-concept (POC) towards a
minimum viable product (MVP) much more efficient. A mockup of a digital twin of the composites
laboratory from Inholland in Delft was developed including a model of a lightweight composites surfboard
and aircraft. In this digital learning environment several composites production and repair scenarios were
virtualized. These scenarios were tested during an existing practical where 3rd year aeronautical
engineering students learn how to develop strategies for the repair of damaged composites. The aim is to
continue this development and obtain a maturity level such it can rolled out as a standard training exercise
in the future curriculum of the aeronautical engineering study program. A user-group was initiated to
provide use-cases for the development of the proof-of-concept which could later be validated in updated
software versions. This user-group included experts from DolphiTech, Dacon BV, Specto Aerospace and
the KLM.
During several user-group meetings it became clear that the required investments for a VR composite
manufacturing trainer are relatively low. Depending on the scope included in the MVP a break-even can be
reached after 2 to 4 years assuming a development team of 3 FTE is required. With the current investment
climate in digital twinning in the composites industry this development seems highly attractive. More
research is required to investigate a sustainable software delivery model. “Software as a Service” (also
known as SaaS) as business model was preferred by the experts and developers in the user-group.
The outcome of this project will be processed at Inholland Composites and next steps can be expected in
follow-up research proposals. A startup has not been realized yet, but particularly during the Corona crisis,
the needs for digitalization of production processes has only increased further.

Beschrijving

The proposed study is focused on finding out whether Virtual Reality is a feasible method to train for composite manufacturing. The demand for cost-effective training methods for composite production is growing. The current training methods are not satisfying the demands of the fast-growing industry. This could be solved with the help of Virtual Reality (VR), potentially cutting down training time and use of material, hence reducing costs. This project will create insight into the technical and economic feasibility of this idea. This will be achieved with interns from Inholland, lecturer and researchers.
